Jersey Gas Company Ltd will appear at the Magistrates Court on Friday 14 March to be charged following an investigation into the Haut du Mont explosion.

The explosion on Pier Road in St Helier killed ten people and destroyed a block of flats in the early hours of Saturday 10 December 2022.

The company - which also trades as Island Energy - is summonsed to answer two charges that are criminal offences under the Health Safety at Work (Jersey) Law 1989.

They include:

  • Failing in their duties to ensure the health and safety of employees

  • Failing in their duties to ensure the health and safety of persons not in their employment

It follows an investigation by Jersey's Health and Safety Inspectorate (HSI) - the island's only independent workplace health and safety regulator.

The HSI inquiry into the incident is part of Operation Spire, running alongside the States of Jersey Police's own investigation.

In February, Neil Armstrong, 56, Lee Ward, 57, and John Wright, 59 were charged with gross negligence manslaughter.

All three men worked for Island Energy at the time of the incident.

Graeme Millar, CEO of Islands Energy Group, has stated: "Our sympathies remain with the families who were impacted by the tragedy at Haut du Mont.

"Safety remains Island Energy's top priority.

"Given the ongoing legal proceedings, it would not be appropriate to comment further on the matter at this time."

The victims' families have been informed.
