Middlesbrough has confirmed head coach Michael Carrick has left the club.

The former Manchester United midfielder was the longest serving manager in the Championship, having replaced Chris Wilder in October 2022.

He took the club to the play-offs in his first season despite being just one point above the relegation zone when he took charge.

However, he was unable to repeat the success, finishing 8th and 10th in the following seasons respectively. He also led the club to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup in 2024.

The 43-year-old's final game in charge was a 2-0 defeat to Coventry City on the final day of the Championship season. It followed a run of just one win in six games, which resulted in the club missing out on the top six and ended their hopes of returning to the Premier League.

He had two years left to run on his contract, which he signed at the end of last season.

Carrick's assistants Jonathan Woodgate and his brother Graeme Carrick will also leave the club.

In a statement, Middlesbrough said: "We'd like thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future.

"The club will be making no further comment at this stage."
